WHAT IS VCD ?. Video CD or "VCD" stands for "Video Compact Disc" and basically is a standard CD Rom that contains moving pictures and sound. VCD's are still very popular in Asia but never gained the popularity in Europe or America that DVD now has. Until the cost of authoring DVD's is as economic as it is for CD's the VCD still remains a great medium for providing high quality video on a PC.

A VCD will play on some standalone DVD Players (it usually say's so on the front panel) and of course on all computers with a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive with the help of a software based decoder / player. All the VCD's featured on this site will play using the Microsoft Media Player. A real advantage of VCD is that they will play on a reasonable spec' PC anywhere in the world !.

A VCD has the capacity to hold up to 74/80 minutes on 650MB/700MB CDs respectively of full-motion video along with quality stereo sound. VCD's use a compression standard called MPEG1 to store the video and audio. The quality of a VCD is roughly the same as VHS tape based movies.

The standard resolution for a PAL encoded VCD is 352x288 which will enlarge to full-screen providing a very good quality picture.
